Intro to Birmingham Journal 1839-1900

Hello, For the last 10 to 15 years years, I have been working on an on-going project to create a coloured poverty line map for Birmingham. Over the years I have dropped in and out with my research and studies. Similar to Charles Booth 'Life and Labour of the people in London' and his coloured maps, as well as Benjamin Seebohm Rowntree and other Historians, I have created my own methodology to create a coloured Poverty Line Map.

Using the 1881 census and my research records for income and expenditure for each household, I am able to ascertain if the family are in poverty or very poor, poor, moderate or comfortable using a detailed methodolgy anaylisis for each street in Birmingham North.

As well as creating a database for the poverty rating for the 'family household' I also find interest in the life of mid to late century 1800's Birmingham; it's history, characters & individuals and the reporting of life in central Birmingham. The Birmingham Journal is an article based Blog for me to post my research on numerous subjects that I have researched over the years, split into four categories.

Rambles

Overcrowding

Cost of Living

Birmingham History

This first blog is just a brief introduction, which I will expand into more going forward.

I would be very interested in reading your blog posts. Samual and Sarah Underhill lived in the Birmingham area. Their son Thomas, my GG Grandfather, was sent to NSW as a young convict. I have always been interested in the family life left behind in Birmingham. Lyn Underhill
